Amber… The Story of a Tree Transformed into Treasure

At Safwat Kahrum, we believe that every piece of amber carries a story that stretches back millions of years before it ever reaches your hands.

Amber — also known by some as Kahrum or Kahrab — is one of the oldest and most precious fossilized organic materials known to us. It is the hardened resin once secreted by trees that disappeared from the earth long ago.

Although amber is found in various parts of the world, Baltic amber remains the most renowned and highly regarded. Millions of years ago, dense coniferous forests covered the region, producing vast quantities of resin. Over time, geological and environmental changes, combined with the movement of tectonic plates, caused much of this resin to become buried beneath water and sediment, where it remained for ages.

Because every tree was different, every resin deposit was unique, and every piece experienced different conditions throughout its formation, amber developed an extraordinary diversity of colors, shapes, and internal characteristics. This is precisely what makes every piece unique — and why we carefully select pieces that carry a distinct character and identity.

In the world of misbaha, amber holds a special place as one of the most valuable and sought-after materials among enthusiasts and collectors. It has even earned the title “the gold of men” — a name that was certainly not given without reason.

Types of Amber: Your Guide to Understanding What You Own

At Safwat Kahrum, we believe our customers should have a complete understanding of what they are purchasing. Here is the basic classification of amber commonly encountered in the world of misbaha:

1. Natural Free Amber
2. Treated Amber
3. Synthetic Amber

First: Natural Free Amber

Natural — One Stone

This is considered the pinnacle of the amber world: a complete misbaha carved from a single piece of natural amber stone, usually shaped by skilled craftsmen, allowing all its beads to share one continuous natural character.

This particular type is generally considered the most valuable and beautiful. It combines the unity of a single stone with the precision of craftsmanship and the beauty of a natural material.

And perhaps what makes it even more special is that time itself becomes part of the piece’s beauty. With use, its color may gradually deepen and its internal patterns and veins become more apparent, allowing the piece to become increasingly distinctive with every passing year.

Natural Nuggets

A misbaha carved from a collection of small pieces, or nuggets, of natural amber. These pieces are carefully selected to be similar in shape before being individually turned and shaped by hand.

Specialized workshops process quantities of these smaller stones into beads according to the size of each individual piece, helping minimize material waste. The resulting beads are then carefully sorted by size and shape and arranged into a complete misbaha with a coordinated shahid and separators.

This is where the value of expert sorting becomes particularly important — it is one of the factors that can make a significant difference in the quality and price of one misbaha compared with another.

Second: Treated Amber

Pressure-Treated Amber

A collection of amber pieces is subjected to high pressure and elevated temperatures, allowing them to be formed into blocks, sheets, or beads without adding external materials.

The quality of this treatment varies from one manufacturer to another. Traditional German pressing is regarded as one of the finest forms of this process and is considered among the rarer and more valuable types within this category.

Natural Amber Treated with Heat

Natural amber that has been shaped and then exposed to heat to give it a darker tone and an aged character, or to produce different colors such as red or blue.

There are also other forms of treatment, including whitening the misbaha or increasing its transparency by altering the density and distribution of air pockets within the amber, along with many other techniques that are difficult to list exhaustively.

Third: Synthetic Amber

Pressed Amber Pieces

A mixture of genuine amber pieces and synthetic materials that are compressed together to create different shapes and forms.

Amber Powder

A completely synthetic material, made to resemble natural amber through its shape and coloring. It may also contain added fragrances that have no relation to the natural scent of genuine amber.

In most cases, this material contains no actual amber. We mention it here because its name and appearance can resemble those of genuine amber — and this is precisely what we believe should be made clear to our customers, so they can purchase with a complete understanding of exactly what they are holding.
